There it is, the Easy Bake Oven (along with a couple of other yard sale spoils). Amanda saw one at the store for $20+ and was fascinated by the word "easy" and the pictures of goodies. She dreamed of how with such a device, she could have freshly made cake or cookie snacks anytime she wanted. Mom told her she could save up for it if she really wanted to, but she also pointed out that the little mixes for it were not only expensive, but also, well, little! Amanda was still intrigued, though, and spoke longingly of owning an Easy Bake Oven.
Enter yard sale season. Mom stopped by a sale that just happened to have an Easy Bake Oven, like new, all the pieces there, and even one of the original mixes. All for $1. So, Mom picked it up, to see if Amanda would want to buy it with her funds. She did, and was VERY excited. Last night Mom and Amanda tried it out, mixing up a regular batch of chocolate chip cookie dough for the occasion. Amanda had fun mixing up the dough, but she observed that using the oven wasn't quite as easy as she'd expected. Also, she was surprised to realize that her two little baking pans meant just two normal size cookies over the course of two baking periods; the first cookie ended up taking about as long to bake as the big pan of cookie bars Mom made with the rest if the dough. Nevertheless, Amanda did enjoy her cookie, and she still likes the oven, especially since we've determined that it is possible to use non-mix doughs in it. It probably also helps that this experience came after working for just one dollar, rather than after saving for weeks and weeks to pay the new price. Tangled was worth it (and yes, she saved for it); this, probably not so much. Still fun for a dollar, though!
